I am going to be scheduling the car to have the axle shaft seals replaced in a few weeks. I figure, what better time to have the gears changed?
I'm thinking - 3.73s will make 6th gear more usable, but really isn't a huge change from 3.42s.
4.11s might be worth it. What 1/4 mile gains have people seen with the 4.11s?
BTW - I don't really care too much about loss of the few mpg involved or top speeds. I'm not one for driving THAT fast to begin with. Besides, with the 6th gear available for pulling I figure it'll still be good to go fast.
Any traction issues with 4.11s? Looking for people to comment that have these gears.
Also - what would you recommend for a stock LS1 with 7psi and bolt-ons? I think the 3.73s would probably match the engine pretty well. But I'm REALLY curious about 4.10s.
My logic being that 3.73s in my Camaro must be about the same as 4.10s with the T56 at the top end, but MUCH cooler down low. ;)
I have the 4.10 and think it's great. Definately not too low. It just seems to put the car in the meat of the powerband at every shift. 2100 RPM @ 80 MPH in sixth, it's perfect. Much easier on the cloutch when parking or maneuvering around. I highly recommend it.
Probably true, though Andy seems to be fine with is and is arguably putting down more to the floor than a ZO6.
Good question, Andy. How is 1st gear? On a rating from "screech" to "haze" with about 8 steps of separation in between......how would you rate it on your combo if you were running the stock run-craps?
I don't see why joecooool, Andy's vette has more power than your Z06 unless you have modded it with H&C, Stroker, or S/C/TT, NoS. No offense dude, just did not see a list of mods and am using Historical Data of 01Z06 dyno runs which show between 330-365 RWHP. I think Andy is putting down over 400 RWHP and he would have more potential for any first gear issues than you would.
Anyone have the performance #'s on this change. 3.42 to 3.73 to 3.90 to 4.10 gears. Someone who has made any of these changes please chime in. I would like to know since this is probably my next upgrade as well.
I see under your sig that you have nitrous on your car. It would be really tough to the car to hook with the 4.11. But it would definitely benefit you while on NA
The z06 has 10% more gearing than the normal car, so 3.42 *1.1 = 3.76 for z06 stock. Try 4.11 * 1.1 = would be 4.52 which seems to me would be too much gear, since the z06 is fine with the stock gears anyway.
Re: 4.11s with 6-speed? Pros/Cons (Andy@AandACorvette)
What I want to seek, is what the top speed is in 6th gear. Will the 4:10's allow the car to use 6th gear for top speed, currently C5's (Z06 included) do not have enough power or gearing to use 6th gear at top speed. Top Speed has been measured by redlining in 5th. I think the coupe went 172-178mph and the Z06's 165-168 mph (drag and lower gearing). Now we know that if you have at least 650 Hp like LPE's coupe, than you can do 225 mph in 6th. But lets say you have a car putting down over 400 RWHP using 4:10 GR, does that allow you to use 6th for top gear run out????? Just curious, I have taken my car up to 150 easy redlining to 4th, but road gets to bumpy to shift into 5th and run it out. Besides that most tracks don't allow you to get over 150 mph! So I am just wondering how many shifts its going to take to get to 150mph.
I made a spreadsheet that shows Max speed in each gear and RPM at a given speed for the A4, MN6 and M12. It also has an M12 vs. MN6 comparo.
Enter your tire height, gear of choice and expected red-line.
A 3.73 gear with an MN6, basically gives you similar gearing to a stock Z06. The 1-2 is still a little shorter in the Z06.
My only concern with the 4.11 in an MN6 would be shifting to 5th at the Drag Strip.
This month's Hot Rod Magazine cautions going beyond 3:73 in a C5 because of strength issues. They say going from 3:42 to the 3:73 is worth 3/10 in the 1/4 mile.
.3 in the 1/4? So 12.95 to 12.65? Those are some interesting numbers. I'll have to pick up this month's copy.
174 redlined in 5th? Ok, so I have to ask now. How accurate are our speedometers? I ask because I bumped to 191 while redlined in 5th gear. Granted, I had a downhill advantage from 155 to about 185.......but still.....if everyone else is running in the 170s....what's up with my car? My ONLY mods at the time were the Borlas, Vortex rammer, and a BIG gut check before I decided to hold wot. This was 6000-6100 rpm in 5th on stock dimension tires and obviously stock 3.42 gearing.
Durability issues with anything greater than 3.73s. I can see that, yes. But we don't have a solid axle rear end, ours is stationary. I would think that would account for something? And when they wrote that in the article, did they just write it or did they back it up and say "in testing, we broke our first set of 4.11s after only 50 passes and 6 month" or anything quantitative?

I went from 3.42's to 3.73s (MN6) and have NOT realized that gain. Granted, I only have a handful of runs on them, but I consider myself a slightly above average driver ( :bb ) and have only gained .2 from the swap. I guess maybe a really good driver may be able to eek out that extra tenth. I went from a best of 12.7s to 12.5s (bolt-ons.)
