Is this normal while the engine is coming up to temperature? The car runs good and does not overheat. Once the temp comes up it seems to go away. Also, what is the normal oil temperature operating range for normal use? Tha car is a 2002 with 800 miles.
Re: Engine Tapping Noise Until Car Warms Up (riderosa)
riderosa, I have the same tapping sound with my '02. I took it by my local dealer and they told me it was normal and that there was no fix for it. Dealer service for Corvettes isn't all that good in my opinion.

Re: Engine Tapping Noise Until Car Warms Up (riderosa)
G Man is right on the money. I had a 02 vert with this noise and took it back to the dealer and asked for another car since it only had 300 miles on it. I got another car and haven’t noticed any noise yet after 2k miles. BTW, I found out that the dealer installed 8 new pistons in the car that I took back. Hmmmmmmm.
Re: Engine Tapping Noise Until Car Warms Up (G Man)
I'm no LS1 expert, but on a lot of high performance engines a little piston slap is normal while warming up. It comes from the greater clearances between the block and pistons, to allow for more expansion during hard driving.
Re: Engine Tapping Noise Until Car Warms Up (arkindared)
I have noticed it recently in my 2002 C5 A4, now at 2300 miles. Yesterday, I started it up to make a few photos of my shop and it was making the noise. I backed it out and stopped it. When I re-started it, the noise was gone.
We just should be thankful we do not have an engine like my wife’s 1998 Explorer. In the winter, you would not believe the racket it makes when it is started up cold. It sounds like it is going to throw a bearing until the oil starts to flow. I would hate to hear it up north where it is really cold! And, of course, the dealer says it is normal. They all speak the same language!!!
Re: Engine Tapping Noise Until Car Warms Up (BostonVette)
I have a 97 C5 with no piston slap :yesnod: but I have 2000 GMC 1/2 ton PU that sounds like a diesel when it starts, detnates all the time, and has loss of power. It now has 68k miles on it. All the dealers say its normal :bs . Makes me glad my C5 is a 97--sounds good and runs great!! :yesnod:
Re: Engine Tapping Noise Until Car Warms Up (tds69tx)
sounds like small pistons under the piston to cylinder wall clearance of .002 casing piston slap.
the under sized pistons also cause oil blow by.
BTW: dealers only want to make money from you so whatever they say it's to prevent them from occuring cost or to get into your wallet. There is no white angel on their shoulder just the red devel the says "screw this guy, make some money" The dealer's love this red devel guy!
