All of the sudden today my car is making a chirping noise from the engine. It seems to be coming from the balancer pulley or somewhere in that area?? The best I can describe it is like a bunch of crickets. What is it and how do I fix it???
Re: What the @#%$ is that chirping noise!!! HELP! (C5-VERT)
A while back I had a chirping noise that I thought was the belt... turned out to be the Water pump.... only 23,000 miles on the car too. I took it to the dealership and it was replaced under warranty at no charge. :)

If it is the belt do not use the belt fix stuff at the auto parts store. It is kinda sticky but actually dries out the belt. So the short term fix makes it worse.
WD-40 does work. It generally will make it squeak a lot as you spray it but have no fear, it will get better. This actually keeps the belt from drying out and geting worse.

Thanks guys it looked again and it seems to be coming from the tensioner but it is very hard to tell. I will try WD-40 to see what it does. It seems WD-40 could cause the belt to slip...Is that safe? I have almost 27k miles on her now. Do I need to go ahead and put a new belt on? How long do they generally last on these cars. It looks fine.

For the cost of the belt, I would replace it.
Spraying WD40 on a moving belt in a running engine
doesn't sound wonderful and that stuff is not paint
friendly!

Oh man, my liver hurts. :cry That's scary! Now you have me thinking how many times have I gotten it on my hands and didn't bother to wash it off right away. My liver does appear to be alot less squeeky lately though. :D
Re: What the @#%$ is that chirping noise!!! HELP! (C5-VERT)
Chirping could be a lot of things. You can diagnose the belt and pulleys by dripping some water on the running surface while the motor is on. If the squeek stops, it's either the belt OR the pulley surfaces are dirty.
I had a belt squeek, and a NEW GM belt did the same thing. I installed a new Goodyear belt and things have been fine since (months ago). The GY belt is $30.
The idler pulley could also be a culprit, which can be replaced in 10 minutes for $40.
BStewart had to get his crank pulley replaced because it had a slight wobble. That's a big job, and probably the last resort if the other stuff doesn't work.

Yes I do have a 6-speed. But it was making the noise all the time. But yesterday it was fine??? I hate that crap. I would rather it make noise all the time instead of randomly. When I looked at my crank pulley it does look like it has a minor wobble. Is it just my eyes or how could that happen? Would a slight wobble cause major problems? Now I am getting worried!
Re: What the @#%$ is that chirping noise!!! HELP! (C5-VERT)
As mentioned earlier, I went through the same problems for almost 2 months. I replaced the idler pulley 2 times the tensioner 2 times, went through about 6 belts of different brands including GM, Goodyear, Dayton, etc...sometimes it would fix the problem for a day or two up to 2 weeks, then start all over again! The sound would vary from a chirping at idle to screeching under excelleration....enough to drive you crazy!! I finally took it to the dealer and they ended up replacing the balancer pulley (it had a slight wobble). It's been about a month now and is still fine. I do cringe every time I start up fearing the worst!
