Default DYI wheel alignment question

When adjusting the control arm cambolts do the suspension need to be unloaded or can the car be on the ground/lift? I'm affraid that by turning the cambolts with the car on the ground there might be damage done to the aluminium frame where the cambolts and washers move. You are in a fact forcing the wheel sideways by turning the bolt and that force acts on the thin aluminum rib where the washers are located. But perhaps that's not an issue?

It's going to be almost impossible for you do to it with the car on the ground, unless you're Popeye. Suspension needs to be loaded and the wheels need to be sitting on an alignment plate so they can be moved in/out, front/back.

I was planning to use a lift. Thanks for the input though, I didn't realize alignment plates had to be used. They obviously remove the force I was thinking could damage the aluminum parts.
