Why is it a stupid question, I have read the manual. I was just trying to get other peoples opinions on what oil they were running. I was not trying to start a big debate.

The June 2009 GM4718M standard lists Mobil1 0W-30, so I thought I would give it a try. BLUF = the average on my daily drive went from 22.4 mpg to 24.8 (an increase of 10%). My daily drive is 56 miles. I start at 2,600’ elevation, drive up the hill to 4,200’ elevation and then back to 2,600’. This first part is 63 mph (cruise on) for 20 miles the next part of the drive is 8 miles of city driving, then reverse to go home. I have been doing this drive for a year and switched to 0W-30 1,000 miles ago. I “do the math” at every fill-up and these numbers are verified. I don’t have any financial or other interest in Mobil1…your mileage may vary. My ride is a stock 03 convertible with an A4, K&N filter and Hypertech tune...and I have 3.15 gears

Lesson learned.

Oil discussions on here get as heated as religious and political discussions in other circles

You do know it won't make a damn bit of difference for one oil change?

Once up to temp, both oils have the same viscosity,so why would your mileage change so much??

You are just assuming that they both have the same hot viscosity. In reality, the 0W-30 may be somewhat lighter when hot, when compared to 5W-30.

But that's only my guess for the claimed 10% mileage improvement.

The 30w in both blends indicate the hot viscosity, once warm they both should be the same.

When they run out of 5-30, I use 0-30, the same as in my Mercedes, it takes 0-40, Wally world stop carrying it in my area, so I put 0-30. seems to run better............

I understand what you're saying very well, but the key words here are SHOULD be the same. I'll bet they are not the same when hot, hence the mileage improvement claim with the 0W-30 oil.

If they were indeed not the same, they would be rated differently hot,say a 5W20,not 5W30.

I think you are missing the point that I was trying to make.

Let me say it this way: Although both oils MEET the hot viscosity standards of SAE 30 oil, their individual hot SUS ratings are are not EXACTLY the same.

Dodge recommended 5-30 up to 2004 for the Viper & SRT engines but changed to 0-40 in 2005......evidently there was good reason for the change...

Probably due to all the engines that blew up.....using 5W30.

Probably b/c it's the best weight suited to cover all applications in all areas and environments that the vehicles may be running in. Not one weight will be perfectly optimal for every situation, so auto companies try to find a best average oil to recommend for a vehicle to make it easier on the average Joe. But average Joe's get this information and obsess about oil brands and weights like you see happening in this thread.
