Default Trans oil change

I have a 98 auto i want to change the auto trans fluid. From what i understand after draining and removing the pan, and re installing the pan and filter. You put in fluid tru the fill hole until it seeps out. You start the car and top it off while its running. Does anyone know approx how much fluid you initially put in prior to starting the car and topping it off?

Well even though u pull the pan its not all going to drain out alot of it will stay in the torque converter, tranny lines, cooler and so on.after filter is replaced and pan is reinstalled.Make sure car is level add it back in until it runs out the access hole.Replace plug start car and I believe the manual calls for about a 140 deg operating temp when checking/adding fluid.I'm going from memory so I would consult a manual or do a search on here.I will say one thing if you dont have a pump then get a helper with a piece of hose connected to a funnel and have him stand beside the car and pour it down the hose while u hold the hose and watch the level from underneath.Good luck its not hard but is kind of a pain.

IIRC the temp range of the trans fluid is right around 87 degrees F - 122 degrees F. Checking it at the correct temp is very important. Mine tested full at 180 degrees and the trans slipped. At the correct temp I found out it was 22 oz. low.

I always try to do the final check of the fluid level at the MIDPOINT of the specified temperature range, which is about 105 degrees F.

Make sure that the car is LEVEL, and the engine is RUNNING.
