Thinner engine oil does indeed free up HP.Why do you think NASCAR crew chiefs use 0w or 5w oils for qualifying?

David426 don't mind most of these people. Some people appreciate that you put forth effort in getting real data to compare. Did you post the data yet? I really would like to look at it. Also which Mobil 1 did you use? Was it the extended performance?

Surely you must be on your second or third rebuild by now!

I just changed my oil today.

My OLM/DIC was at 7% with 7,000 mile on the oil as I had changed it this past October. I usually wait till 2-0% but I had the time to do it today.

Good to know that Mobil1, I've been using 0W-30, works well.

When I run out of the stockpile of M1 0W-30 I had stocked up on when it was on sale/cheaper a little while back, I'll look for the next cheapest GM4791-spec oil.

Manganese is Found in Octane Booster,, which is why that number is high.
Magnesium is found in Royal Purple Not in Mobil 1... Thats why numbers are high on RP test.. (This is normal)\
Copper is high on RP test.. Due to new valve seats/springs which contain brass/copper.. These numbers will fall back into normal range on next the oil change

Do you send virgin samples of the oil as well? How do you know(by the report) how much the TBN has gone down, if you don't know where it started?

Thanks,

TBN starts at 11.5 on both.. Blackstone will give you this info.. I had to call and speak to a Lab Tech.... I would have liked to see it on the reports

I put more faith in David's comparison!
Because most of them post the actual sheet just like David did. An intereting point to note is that in the C3 forum it has been discussed a few times that test results from Blackstone have been no where close to test results from other labs. You would think that the same oil batch collected the same way at the same time would yield the same results regardless of which company tests it.

Yep, I am resurrecting a long dead post.

Thank you very much for this thorough/unbiased test and post, David. I was wondering exactly which was better and why, since I am running RP, and I do believe that I will be going back to Mobil 1 on the next change. Not that I not believe RP is bad, I just have proof that Mobil 1 is slightly better now.

Thanks again !

I may have to use my scanner and post a link or take a picture and post it that way.. I apologize... Anyhow the results looked really good and both oils looked good after 4000 miles on each sample.. It was pretty much equal between both Mobil 1 and Royal purple.. I had the TBN done on both samples.. This test shows just how much life is left in the oil.. The higher the number, the more life you have in the active ingredients.. anything less than 2.0 means its time for an oil change.
The Mobil 1 5w-30 had a TBN of 3.9 at 4000 miles and Royal Purple had a TBN number of 2.6 after 4000 miles.. So what does this mean?? The Mobil 1 had more life left in it.. I could go to around 7000 miles on a change.. The DIC read 30% oil life remaining when I changed the oil at 4000 miles on both samples which is right on Par with the TBN number.. The Royal Purple had a lower TBN number than the Mobil 1.. So I suspect maybe 5000-6000 miles of total life from Royal Purple, before it goes under the 2.0 TBN number.. I hope someone appreciates my efforts. I'm sick of seeing No one else has made an effort to do a totally unbiased Lab Test.. Bottom line is that both Mobil 1 and Royal Purple are dang near identical on wear numbers.. Mobil 1 has a bit more of a longer change interval before its active ingredients break down.. 2002 Z06 with no track days involved.. Yes I do drive it hard consistently and it took 1 year to put on 8000 miles.. I did my best to make sure everything was as equal as possible for this comparison
Thanks for your efforts and results.

Default Oil System Performance Mobil1/AMSOIL/Royal Purple

So guys here is the 30,000 foot summary
What is important is oil system performance in the engine and oil performance. In my LS7 Z06 I have oil analysis from Oil Analyst Labs. The spectrographic analysis shows no abnormal signs of wear in the engine at the 5000 mile interval. This is with several track days on the car. Silicone, iron, copper, lead and tin were all in normal range. Copper might have been a bit high but that is said to be due to cam bearing break in. Silicon is present in high wear steels and airborne dirt. Because it and iron were both single digits there is no air borne dirt coming through the K&N cold air system or wear. So that is good. TBN was still at 4. So base additive was not depleted or the antiwear package. The oil had much life left.
Therefore Mobil 1 full synthetic is fit for purpose on the LS7 including hard track days.

Royal Purple has a higher level of anti wear and AMSOIL has a higher level of TBN. But nether is mechanically significant. You do not need to pay for these added levels. Cold start tests show no significant difference between the three oils. While subjective the oil filter is usually the limiting element in the system. Oil is cheap engines are not. I change oil and filter at 7500 miles or right before track days to make sure the filter is new and no bypassing will occur.
