Default MGW w/C6 ****: shift boot.

I am about to pull the trigger on an mgw for my C5 and I want to use the factory C6 ****, however it seems like it would look a little tacky with a C5 shift boot since the bolt that retains **** would be visible and it wouldn't mount flush against the bottom of the ****.

Is there a common fix for this? Would I have to get a C6 or custom boot?

Because the MGW is a bit shorter than stock, you'll have some "extra" stock boot to accommodate. Just reverse-turtleneck the top of the boot and it should slide right up over the bottom of the ****. Worst case scenario might involve relieving a few stitches at the top of the boot.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about, even though my boot is aftermarket and the **** isn't a C6 version.

I have this same set-up in my C5. I took a few of the stitches out of the top of the boot so that it would go around the base of the C6 ****. Once I got it where I wanted it, I used some PEEK drawn fiber (fancy, very thin finishing line) to tie around the inside of the boot and around the shift ****. It doesn't move and looks like it is factory.
You don't have to use the thread that I used just something thin enough to tie a knot and not look terrible.
Good luck!

It should work fine with the original C5 shift boot. I installed a stock C6 Z06 shifter in my C5Z. I just did pretty much what c5vetteguy did. Turned the boot inside out, flipped it upside down, slid it down over the shifter shaft as far as I could putt it. Then I slipped the C6 **** inside the still inside-out shifter boot and into place. I stuck the small screw for the **** thru the boot material and tightened in in place. This helps to hold the boot in place and keep it from shifting about. Then pulled the boot down over the shifter and into place. Can't see or feel the screw through the boot and everything has been working fine for about 3 months. I couldn't be happier with the results.
Hope that helps. Good luck!!

I'm not sure that would look right for a C6 ****. There is a small gap on the C6 **** that is designed to retain the (C6) shift boot. This ensures that the boot will ride flush up against the bottom of shift ****. The C5 shift boot has a detent that holds the shift boot to the shift lever itself. This creates a small gap between the shift **** and the top of the boot (on my C5 atleast), but because the shift **** is flat on the bottom, it looks fine. However, the C6 **** has a hole for the bolt that retains the ****, and unless you pull the shift boot over that portion, it will look pretty tacky.

I'm thinking I am going to have to get a custom or C6 boot, or it will look pretty crappy...

So, you are saying that the C5 boot fits over the bolt hole on the C6 shift ****? I just don't want the bolt to be showing throught he shift boot is all.

Thanks

Oguruma, that is correct. Fits great and covers everything nicely. I was going to use a small tie wrap to snug the boot to the bottom of the C6 **** on the underside (hidden inside) of the boot but when I flipped the boot right side out to see how it looked I thought it was fine so I skipped that. I could always add that later if the boot starts to drift or droop down, but, so far, so good after a few months. If a pic would help let me know and I'll try to get one for you today or tomorrow.
You're gonna love the C6 ****....huge improvement in appearance, feel and shifter control over the C5 ****....IMHO.
Good luck!!!

A pic would be great actually. How do you like the C6 shifter? I still haven't exactly decided which one I want. I know I want a shifter with a smaller lever than stock, but I can't decide between an MGW ($$$) and a factory C6 shifter.

Also, do you know if there is a difference between the standard C6 shifter and the Z06 version?

Thanks
Jeremy

Oguruma, I'll get that pic for you today or tomorrow.
I love the C6 shifter. I bought mine used from a Forum member for a good price. If I was going to buy new I'd probably go with the MGW unit. Those are REALLY tight. Most really like them but no all will. I bought some tires off a guy that works at MGW and drove to the MGW shop to pickup the tires. Got a tour of the facility. Great guys, great shop and great shifters. MGW is primarily a manufacturer of custom small arms parts, very tight tolerances on everything and they do a great job.
There used to be a difference between the standard and Z06 shifter assemblies. The difference was that the shifter base had fixed metal bushings where it attached to the torque tube and the standard shifter had rubber bushings. In 2009 or 2010 they went to all rubber bushings in all shifters since some folks were having problems with vibrations in the solid bushing version. I never had any problem with the metal bushings in my C5Z shifter so I decided to go with the same setup when I changed to the C6 shifter. If you're only going to change the shifter and not the base then there is no difference at all between the different C6 shifters.
Hope that helps.
