I know this is a subject that has been heavily discussed and I have done some searching for prior posts, but was unable to find a post that addresses my question. The story is: I had this day off from work all planned out, woke up early drove around to a few places first then was ready for my big appointment. As soon as I get ready to start the car it says service column lock and the steering wheel would not even budge (I have a 98 vert). So I not only missed a day of work I failed to go to the appointment (last minute thing). I had it brough to over to the dealership and since somehow they have one corvettte technician and 6 more vettes came in today they gave me no rent a car... I am so :mad :mad :mad :mad
Anyway, was there another way to solve this problem without wasting the whole day? (right then and there)
Re: Service Column Lock - Wheel could not even move (JeffsVette)
Usually if you keep trying long enough it will finally unlock. One thing that also worked for me first time I tried it (though may have been coincidence) is I started the car, then turned the ignition off then on quickly enough that the engine did not even have a chance to die, unlocked right away. Wondering if the engine running and cycling the ignition triggered some emergency release there to prevent the column from locking while driving, dunno but it worked. Otheres have had success pulling fuses and jerking the wheel real hard from sided to side while turning the ignition on and off worked, but this didn't seem to help alot for me. There is a recall so it should get fixed, mine hasn't locked since (knock on wood)
Re: Service Column Lock - Wheel could not even move (JeffsVette)
I can't remeber the fuses to pull but if you do a search i am sure you will find it...anyway...that will be a quick fix and then buy a C5 solutions bypass kit and be done with it....the H*LL with the GM fix.
I have also heard if you disconnect battery for 10 minutes it will reset but that didnt work for me.
Jeff, I got my column lock bypass from L.A.P.D. (supporting vendor) and to me it was worth it's weight in gold and very easy to install. A locked steering wheel is one aggravation I NEVER wanted to deal with. http://www.thelapd.com/Merchant2/mer...duct_Code=CCLB
What is the C5 Solutions bypass kit? Where can I get it?
I think Tom (C5Solutions) quit making the bypass kit once the factory recall on the column lock was issued. There may still be some available from some of the supporting vendors...
Re: Service Column Lock - Wheel could not even move (pewter99)
Thanks all for all of your help. To update you they are now going to do a temporary fix until they can order the part from some place. They are going to do it free they said. If they are not I will buy the bypass from RonC. Thankyou all again. I now dont have to worry about myself ripping the :cuss steering wheel off.
I looked on one of Kens newsletters about the recalls. I dont think it covered my vette because of the vin number. I will call up the dealership tomorrow and see what is the deal. If not Chevy can look forward to a letter.
Re: Service Column Lock - Wheel could not even move (JeffsVette)
Had the same problem just after I filled the vette up with gas, locked up right at the pumps, Even though my car wasnt covered under the VIN recall, my dealer fixed it anyway.....Ever notice how people look at you strange when something happens to a Vette. Good Luck
