Found some small wet spots under the rear end and when I jacked it up, the fluid was red in my YR 2000 6-speed Vette. I have read some threads about a vent causing some fluid leaks in the read-end area, but this look like too much for that. Let me know your thoughts on how to resolve this
One inexpensive suggestion, I had a similar leak and wanted to be sure that it was a problem and not the vent before having someone else look at it...back it up onto some ramps (or jack it up, use cribs or jackstands, etc.) Get under there with a few cans of engine degreaser and then wash it off. You might be able to tell better where it's coming from or if it doesn't happen again, you know it was the vent. Mine was the vent.
To start the diagnosis, investing in a few cans of degreaser are a whole lot cheaper than someone trying to charge you to fix somethin' back there that might not be broke. Post what you find. There are a lot of experienced people here that will help you.

M6s are filled with ATF, Dexron III so thats whats leaking out. You can see the drain plug in the photo on the bottom of the trans. I change mine out every spring, just did mine yesterday. Pull the fill plug out, and top the ATF off. Then clean off the old oil residue, and keep an eye on the leak. If its a small slow leak, its easy to top off and ATF fluid is cheap.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to just change it all out (3.25 qts), mine shifts so much easier with Mobil 1 synthetic Dexron III.
Mine leaked @ the exact same spot After changing out diffs.
There is a metal seal in the front side of that tranny short tail section,
that could have gone bad..
Also there is a large rubber o ring close to where the tranny mates up to the differential. Should be but I didn't replace with a new one when I switched out the diff. We both probably have the same o ring issue.
You can see a drop forming on the lowest spot in the picture - The piece hanging down in the top of the picture is rubber, so I assume that is a rubber gasket
I found out that the flat surface mating area between the rear tranny & extension housing, the factory applied a black sealant.
No gasket. After time this sealant gives way to a leak in the seam/mating area of the two pieces.
Next time I have a reason to dop the rear cradle, etc I will take care of it. You would have to seperate the extension from the rear case to PROPERLY fix the leak.
There have been several members post that they cleaned this area & then applied black RTV sealant to the seam, & this took care of the problem. I would think you would have to drain & suction dry the fluid from the tranny, before trying that method.
