Recently noticed a little steering play at the steering wheel (2003 convert. w/ 28K miles). Looked into it today, and found no play at the steering wheel to shaft, coupler (u-joint), tie rods, etc. But did find that the rack input shaft (pinion shaft) would move vertical ever so slightly (with a noticeable click). It is not the steering shaft U-joint, but the input shaft itself. And yes, the U-joint clamp bolt is more than tight enough.
I checked the tightness of the rack mounting bolts, and re-torqued them (they were slightly lower than the required 79 ft-lbs., but no where near loose), and that made no difference to the vertical (radial) input shaft play.
Other than replacing the Rack, any guidance or thoughts?
Any "tricks" to replacing the rack? I have the Service manual, but too pissed to look at it now.
Have replaced one on a C4, and that was not a picnic........
Thanks,
Plasticman

Removing the rack is a pain, but doable. Everybody that installs a cam has had the fun of removing it. There's a lot of info from past threads, do a search. If you have to remove it you might as well install a cam. The rack is the hardest part.
