I was at Buttonwillow over Easter weekend, and while grabbing for fourth midway through the esses, I engaged second gear instead. The rear started to kick and I dipped the clutch quickly. Revs did come up; however, I did not catch if the tach went into the redline or not. Fortunately, I was short shifting to fourth when this occured, so at least I was not coming down from max revs. I have been a bit paranoid in the last few weeks, wondering if something was damaged. I am searching for a bit of peace of mind, therefore, I am wondering if there are any symptoms that the car would be exhibiting if the engine sustained damage. Would the computer be throwing any codes? What kind of diagnosis can be done to see if there are any problems? Thanks in advance for your input!
Is your car doing anything weird? Is there coolant in your oil? I wouldnt worry about it. I have bounced my car off the redline before. I would only be concerned with your syncros in your tranny. They are pretty fragile and go out easily on missed shifts. If you start to grind 2nd or 4th, take it to the dealer and complain.
Since the rear started to kick out, you likely lost traction which probably limited the RPM the engine saw. By far the most common problem with over-revving a stock LS1 and the first thing that would likely go wrong before anything else is bent pushrods anyway. Unless you hear a loud tapping sound which is caused by bent pushrods, then chances are you got your foot in the clutch in time to prevent any kind of damage, especially if you were short shifting. So don't worry, if you hurt something you'd know it :yesnod:
I've heard of having bent push rods with no unusual noises. If any push rods are bent you will lose power. For absolute peace of mind I'd have them checked, it's not a major job.
