With 1100 miles, I started to hear chattering from the clutch or trans area.
I thought it could be the linkage, clutch plate, or throw out bearing. Also the clutch would make a popping sound after disengaging it quickly to the neutral position. The dealer could find nothing wrong and referrred me to tech bulletin#88-351-7B. "Neutral gear rattle is characteristic of all manual transmissions. Some are more pronounced than others due to material of trans case-thickness of fluid..." Any other thoughts??

My '99 was just in the shop yesterday for tire repair ($96 to fix a flat? :cuss ). Anyway, while I was in I asked them to take a listen to the same sound you describe. I also have a bit of a rattle when initially starting off the line and I thought the same as you - clutch, linkage, etc., but they assured me, as they did you, that this was a "normal" sound and not to be concerned. Hmm. I've got 35,000 on it with no troubles, knock on my head... :jester

You should have gone straight to the used car purchasing manager and have them appraise your car for trade. He'd probably low-ball you $6000 below wholesale claiming a "weak" transmission based on the rattle. Then let him and the service manager fight it out. :boxing :bs :bs :bs
It is normal for this tranny. It is because GM uses low viscosity ATF fluid in the gearbox, which is too thin to damp the vibration of the gears on the mainshaft. GM uses ATF to increase the fuel economy of the C5 (probably 0.2 MPG)
I have Redline fluid throughout my tranny/Differential and it still makes the rattle. Doesn't bother me so much but I just push the clutch in when shutting it off.
