Default Differential Case Differences

Does anyone know if there is a difference between 2.73 and 3-series differential cases? My buddy and I just set up a set of 4.10 thick gears on a 2.73 carrier in a 3.42 case, and the vss signal is weak. The speedo kicks in at higher speeds, but below about 20kph its dead. I'm wondering if the sensor is positioned differently between the two to compensate for the different ring gear positions?

Tommy lets drive tomorrow at constant speed and we will compare with GPS and also with your car as well, that way we can tell, and we go from there. Meanwhile someone chime in here and let us make aware.

Thanks for your help in setting up this gears.

From what I've been told........YES

I've heard about spacers? But I don't have the knowledge to say exactly what your up against. I have a 2.73 and just bought a nice 3rib 3.15 off flea bay for my future diff change.

Good luck with the mod!

The 2 series case has the sensor hole more offset to the pass side compared to the 3 series case. Unless you weld and reposition the sensor hole, you would have to use a 3 series case to fix it.

I had a feeling you would know! I guess we'll be doing it again with a different case...hopefully it will take less than 8 hours to set the shims this time! Live and learn. Thanks Rick.

Well me and tommy (its go time) drove over 40 miles and felt no difference in odometer difference, only except starting from a stop line it takes literally few sec's before you read odometer, eventhough sensor location change even few milli sec it still built strong magnetic field enough to catch odometer. So all in all iam at no loss, after shear hardwork of both new clutch and setting up differential for first time, i consider its a success, just need to learn new clutch and aggressive 4.10 acceleration..lol. Iam a hapy camper and even so to have tommy as buddy to help me accompish this huge task.

Take it to Cayuga this summer with some DRs and see if anything breaks! That ought to show us how well we did We'll swap in a different case in the fall sometime. And you still owe me a steak dinner.
