got into my car the other morning and the steering wheel would not move, it said something like "service column lock". it told me to remove key and wait 10 seconds. it still would not work, drove backwards and forwards and it finally went away. freaked me out big time. why did it do this??
Re: service column lock???? why did this happen??? (broncos872)
The anti-theft column lock failed and you lucked out that it disengaged. You have three choices: 1) Do nothing and it may eventually strand you without warning. 2) Check to see if you fall in the range of VIN #'s that were recalled for the fix. If you are, you can go to the dealer and have the supposed "fix" installed. 3) Buy the aftermarket Column Lock Bypass and be done with it.
If you do the dealer fix and it fails, the aftermarket unit cannot be installed in place of it.
I have a 2002 which supposedly has the fix built in but I have a CLB on the shelf "just in case".

Go to Ken's pages on the Forum, he has a listing of the AFFECTED YEARS AND VINS. There is/was a campaign to fix the problem at GM's expense. It is a safety issue, factory call back Had mine done last year. 98 Coupe.

The recall simply removes the actuator pin. So it will not lock. To clear the service column lock message (if it is still on the DIC), you need to pull fuse 25 under the passenger side footwall. I would call the dealer and see if yours had the recall performed and if it falls under the vin range, if so I say have it done for piece of mind in teh future so you don't get stranded ever.
