Marbles in Crankcase ?
Sorry for posting this in the C5 group, but since this is the most active, I'm hoping someone will have an idea what's going on.
My C4 has 87k on it, and just recently started sounding like it has marbles rolling around in the crank case. It is very loud at idle, but goes away under higher RPM’s. It gets even louder under low RPM load. The check engine light came on once, then went out on the highway.
Other than the noise, the car seems to drive fine, with the possibility of poorer gas milage.

Sounds to me like you may have an oxygen sensor in need of replacement.
As far as the noise you're hearing.....I don't know.....here is a speculation:
Suppose an O2 sensor is bad and the mixture is way rich....could then be diluting the oil with gasoline and making the oil very thin. Under that condition the bearings might be noisy. Is the oil pressure low? Pull the dip stick and see if you can smell gasoline on it.
Best I can suggest is get the rich mixture fixed, change the oil and filter and see if that makes any difference.
