Should i get the torque drive or the synthetic multi vehicle.
I have 48k on my 02 A4 and notice as its getting hotter here in Phoenix my tranny temps are hitting the 212 mark on my one big drive every week. Would like to change the fluid as this has always been an AZ car and also i hear Amsoil will help drop the temps a little bit. Dont need a tranny cooler, just a little drop in temp would be nice.
Oh forgot to add the fluid has not been changed before and if i read correctly i need 5 quarts of whichever fluid gets chosen and a filter/gasket from autozone sense amsoil does not carry them. Correct?
I just bought all the stuff to do this. All the multi vehicle bottles I could find including Royal Purple didn't not state Dex III as a compatible fluid.
I would not use either of the Amsoil fluids that you mentioned.
I would recommend using Dexron VI fluid. It's GM's latest formulation of of Dexron ATF, and it's fully rearward compatible to replace all previous Dexron transmission fluids used in GM cars and trucks.
Being a synthetic blend, it's designed to withstand higher operating temperatures.
I replaced mine yesterday with Valvoline MaxLife. It's what my parts guy recommended. When we looked at the back of the new GM VI it said that it replaces all dextron except use in manual transmissions. That's why I opted out for using it. Royal purple was going to break the bank and he only had two quarts of Lucas on hand.
Will valvaline help lower the temps also? Guess i dont really need it too ut would be nice.
I will go pick up 5 quarts of the maxlife i guess, it will be alot cheaper thats for sure

Yea it will be cheaper got mine for 4.50 a quart. Just noticed that you are talking A4 though, in that case I probably would get the GM Dextron. Newer oil will help with the temps some but with the heat like it is I wouldn't expect much.

I just think it is funny about how there are just major differences on oil opinions across the various forums here. On the C3 forum if you are not running amsoil/redline or other "high end" etc fluids you are destroying your engine or tranny. Here if the general didnt put his stamp of approval on it then it might as well be dog pee.

I know amzoil is some great stuff just as is royal purple and Lucas. But Dextron is factory spec... and quite a bit cheaper at my local store than Amzoil so what's wrong with running it?

Lubricants have been greatly improved since the C3 production era.
It makes good sense for C3 owners to want all the benefits of today's lubricants for their classics.
The fluids GM approved for use, from 1963 to 1982, were vastly inferior by today's standards.
Even Amsoil, in their application guide, recommends using Dexron VI fluid in A4 equipped Corvettes. The #3 footnote, in the link below, refers to a GM issued TSB about ATF fluid recommendation. http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehic...LET+CORVETTE+G
