Default HUD burning out ??

I've been told to keep my HUD turned off when I'm not really using it because the bulb is only good for XX hours and cost big $$ to fix. Can this be true? Any experience with your HUD not working after a given amount of time?
Thanks!

Unless I'm mistaken, the HUD is illuminated fluorescently (like the indicators on your climate control system and radio -- not the same as a fluorescent light in your house, though) and should never burn out. If it stops working, it's not because a bulb burned out.

I'm "using" my HUD whenever I'm driving the car. Let's do a little math and see how long it really needs to last. Let's say the car should run to 150,000 miles. Let's say I average 30 mph over that entire time. Then the number of hours the car is running is 5,000 hours (150,000/30). That's really not that long. There are incandescent bulbs that can last that long. I would think that the florescent display would last much much longer than this.

I sure hope this short lifespan deal isn't true. I plan on keeping my C5 for a long time!

Are you certain that the HUD was not inadvertently dimmed. There is a slider on the left side of the gauge pod that controls HUD brightness. make sure that it has not been slid to dim the HUD. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the input. Just to clear things up, my HUD works perfectly now and the brightness control also works fine. I was just warned that the bulb is only good for so many hours and the less you use it, the longer it will last. I use mine all the time and have no intention of saving the bulb life for the next owner however if turning it off on bright sunny days would save some life, I would do it. As if I can get any bright sunny days in Oregon. Oh wait, the sun will shine in August I'm sure.......
Thanks again.

THERE IS NO BULB!

it's a vaccum floresent display, just like the DIC.

use it as much as you like!
