After doing some research I am reading that my 00 has 26lb injectors right? I am planning a cam swap. My buddy is giving me the Z06 cam and heads out of his car once he does his cam swap. I know I can go with a better cam but it is free and since I have to do the supporting mods anyway, a free cam that is better than the one I already have is a good deal. My question is, what is the likely hood that I will run out of injector for this setup? Total mods will be LS6 cam, 243 heads, LS6 intake, long tubes once the swap is done.
Your injectors will be fine assuming fuel pressure is at spec. Check your pushrod length and use some .040 head gaskets while you are at it. Will pick up a couple hp and be less prone to detonation.
I am getting the z06 pushrods from his engine as well but if I go with the .40 gaskets it is going to shave a little off of the stock thickness. Wouldn't that raise your chances of detonation since it is upping the compression.
If you're getting the heads and cam from the Z06 you will not have an issue with pushrod length. Valves were a bit taller on the Z to make up for the smaller base circle of the cam. The .040 gasket shouldn't cause any issues. If it concerns you just stick with the oem gasket.
Thinner gaskets reduce the "quench" area which actuallly reduces the tendency to detonate even though you get a slight increase in compression. It is the best of both worlds but if you are not comfortable do not do it.
You'll want to have the used heads checked by a machinist, and likely there will need to be some surface milling to get them trued-up for a good seal.
Get that done before you select a head gasket.
And ChucksZ06 is giving great advice to apply regarding gaskets once the heads are prepped.
Personally I'd upgrade to GM 28# injectors for two reasons:
1.) Your old 26# injectors are...old. Likely they're dirty and not flowing uniformly. A fresh or rebuilt set of 28# puts you into GM's configuration for that head/cam package.
2.) You'll be tuning your PCM anyway to make good use of the additional airflow. Injector tables are cake while you or your tuner shop are in there.
My plan was to take the heads in to get new springs and seals installed as well. Sounds like a plan on the gasket, Now just need to know which one. I was originally planning on just getting the texas speed gasket kit which has everything in it so I was never really looking at brands etc. It is going to be a while. He is in the desert now, I go as soon as he comes back but he knows how to do the swap so since all I have to pay for is the support parts and a tune it is worth the wait.
Guys at Texas speed are great. Ask them what they have available for gaskets and how much and they will fix you up. The thinner gaskets cost a little more. Good luck with the mods.
