Default Oil burn

The wife took the vett on a road trip yesterday. The low oil warning light came on 5 miles from home. I checked the oil and it was about a half qt low. But what bothered me the most was the oil looked a little burnt. No bad smell . I know that a little oil usage is normal but the oil color was not . I have about 3000 miles on the oil change and it was mobile 1. Getting ready for a long road trip 2500 miles think I will change the oil to be safe. WSould a 160 thermistat help keep everything a little cooler ? Also I have taken off the nose cover. Thoughts or ideas about the burnt looking oil ?

Warning light should NOT be on for 1/2 qt. down.

Try check on level ground. A T-stat won't do squat.

My '01 drinks Mobil-1 5W-30 like a binge. I switched to Mobil-1 0W-40 a while back and problem solved, less than 1qt per 3K miles.
