Hi all... I have a little problem going on but its not something that happens every time.
I notice that when I am accelerating on a ramp going onto a highway that sometimes I cannot get the car into 5th. I can get it into 5th with no issues while cruising around town though... would it matter if i was accelerating a bit aggressively as opposed to just cruising around?
It seems to feel like its hitting metal. No grinding noise- just hitting something that is preventing it from hitting 5th (perhaps I am hitting the gate?). I am not pushing too far where it thinks I am trying to go into reverse- seen that happen once before and it made a grinding noise. It might take 2 or 3 tries to get into 5th while merging onto the highway. Anyone know what I am doing wrong here? Please dont say driving while female and Asian!
I would like to order a MGW shifter but that is going to be in another few weeks or so.
I did a search btw... did not see a previous thread.
Although I love my mgw shifter, hitting that 4-5 can be tricky with the additional stiffness. If found it easiest to put my elbow in before pushing from 4th to 5th as to get more power to overcome the somewhat tough centering. Try doing that with the current shifter and see if you do better. Remember, elbow in towards your body and not out on the center console so you can deliver a good diagonal push.
Idk about the OP's case, but from the sounds of it he's like me and it just phsyically wont go into 5th at all, no matter how hard you try. Sometimes it will take me 2 or 3 tries before it will finally let it go in. One time it tried going into reverse. Not trying to shift quick from 4th to 5th, just easy driving.
Im pretty sure that it isnt the reverse solenoid going bad (does not grind, just feels like its hitting metal or something) but I havent been able to drive the car this week because we have a car in the shop and mine is being used by my fiance to get back and forth to work. He was telling me that it was not giving him any problems. Anyways, i will have to get to the bottom of this during the weekend when I have time. Thanks for all the suggestions... I am going to get an MGW short throw shifter ordered by Fri/Sat so I hope this problem doesnt keep happening.
I had the exact problem. I drove the car like that for about a year. If I could shift at the sweet spot it would go right in, if not it would not go in. I had sold another Hot Rod so I bought a new trans and clutch and everything is great now.

Thats a little more of an expensive fix than i can stomach right now lol
I am also planning on ordering an MGW shifter as soon as I can decide on a **** so I'll see what happens.
