I just purchased a 2001 Black coupe w/ 27k miles. Looks/drives like new. Has the chrome Z06 wheels on it, but the inside of the rims behind the spokes look like there has been some corroding and/or peeling of the finish. The spokes and outside edges of the rims look like new, and only the rims on one side of the car are effected. Any ideas on how to restore or repair the rims to like new condition would be appreciated.

Z06's never came with Chrome wheels from the factory. If its a factory wheel (GM stamps and Speedline stamps on the inside of the spokes) then the previous owner had them chromed. Cheaply it seems...
If they don't have the stampings on the inside of the spokes then they are China made wheels. Who knows what Chroming process they use.
I think your stuck , and will have to get it re-chromed (if you like chrome). Might be a good chance to have them powder coated what ever color you want. Powder coating will be stronger, and not peel. Will hold up better to the elements too.
There are lots of aftermarket vendors of Corvette rims. Sadly, most of them are of poor quality. Sadly, I learned the hard way like many others. In the end, I found a member here selling original Y2K 5spokes in great shape. Keep your eyes out in the parts section.
As others have stated, no C5 came with chrome wheels...OEM were either painted gray or polished aluminum, made by Alcoa or Speedline.

Thanks for the info. The previous owner did indeed have the rims chromed.....sad. I live in Michigan, any ideas on the best place to have the rims powder coated?

Probably not worth saving now, the old chrome has to come off.

I know a few spots in Dallas that will powder coat wheels for $75/wheel. Of course you must get your wheels stripped first. I'm not sure how much that would run.
Do a search in your area for powder coaters. Ask them about pricing, and stripping chrome.

Thanks for the info! I'll do some research, then get the rims done this winter when i'm going to be storing the vehicle anyway. Michigan winters, ya know.
