I usually stay out of 6th.Its just my habbit and my car has gobs of tqe.so even in 6th up a big hill I have no need to downshift,if I've been driving hard45 minutes or more in the 125-200 mph range in 4th and 5th,to let my turbos cool off I'll give it 10 minutes in 6th and watch my oil cooler bring it down 20 degrees even on a 110 deg. day.I'm always very aware of my oil temp. living in a microwave (AZ.)but with the new C5R its never been above 215 but then again the 118 deg days havent arrived yet,but it runs quite a bit cooler than the TT 5.7 and of course being in 4 th with 335/30/18 Pilot sports and punching it and having the back blow out burning rubber on a street car with 3:42's is a rush in itself. No oil burnt between changes but on the 5.7 I would get 24+mpg in 6th gear long 100mph cruiing the 427 returns 19-21 without using the turbos alot if I run 100 octane and about 13 lbs lbs. of boost and play at higher speeds it moves down to 15-17 and you can only do it on 1 tank leaving town then its back to 5lbs.( I could get away with 9 and have no detonation with a can of turbo 108 great product) so at 5.00 per gallon you almost feel its mandatory to go nuts and HAVE FUN!!!.David Smilovic
6th gear, is the way to go. If you need to pass someone in a hurry then shift. You will get awesome gas mileage (Vette does better than explorer on long trips)
