None that I am aware of but perhaps others will chime in.
At the end of the 98 model run, they went to smaller fuel injectors and I think got rid of the ability to adjust the fuel pressure. This made a few more HP on a stock motor but then limited big gains if you made major changes
30k miles on my 97 and no troubles. Like said before, fuel pump is loud but just go faster to drown it out. The officer didnt like that exuse for doin 92 in a 45 though.
I will tell you the problems that it doesn't have, because that is the only problems that I have had in 40K miles!
I don't have column lock issues.
I don't have "pup" cats
The 97's have the same size fuel injectors as current year Z06's in fact they had them first.
Only draw backs I can see is:
If you want Active Handling
If you like the Hud option
If you wanted a door lock on the passenger side.
If you want a telescopic steering wheel.
I think there were only like 7K 97's made. May mean something in the future. A little more attention to detail as well.
I think the biggest benefit is that you can pick one up for less than a new one, and use the extra money to supercharge it and blow away most things on the street...unless of course it is another C5 with big modifications or a Viper...then it will come down to the driver....don't forget sleeper F Bodies too.

For someone wanting to get into a C5 a clean low mileage 97 is the ticket. I'm guessing mid 20K range. Then it can be modded to the point no one will know year it is and it has the petential to out perform Z06's with the right mods. With a low initial investment the LPE SC package is well within reach. The possibilities are endless.
