After 11 years...it finally happened. I turned off my lights this evening and a horrible sound came from the right front headlight. It was obviously the motor that was making the noise....it lasted a good 5 or 6 seconds after I turned the lights off.
Can I change the motor myself? I'm not a gear head in the true sense of the word.... Is it best to just take it to a dealer? Ugh... What's the cost I'm looking at???
At the top of this page is the DIY sticky thread. There are a few links posted that show you the process. It is pretty simple to do and will probably take you an hour being as you have never done it before. Might as well buy the kit to do both sides because the other one will go before long
To expand on the previous post, at the top right is a search button. If you do a search for things such as headlight, noise, motor etc you will find 1000's of threads about this with more posts than you would ever want to even read.
Yes, you can do it yourself, It is the plastic gear inside the motor that needs replacing this thread below is what helped me jump in and tackle my issue, also as mentioned above I ordered my kit from Rodney...Get to know your Vette it will thank you
What is it, the time of the year for this problem? I've read a lot of threads on this lately and it happened to me also recently. Just got my new brass gear. Now I gotta find the time to do it.
Maybe someone can explain why my headlights open and close properly but make that grinding noise if the gear is stripped? One would think it wouldn't open.
