Going with the Goodyear...
Any tips on an easier or proper removal/installation procedure?
Also, how much tension (err.."play") should I allow in the new belt?
What's the normal wear, use time, on a serp belt? The service rep says I need a new one. Should I buy from the dealer or do it myself? Where do I get such a belt for the 5.7 V8, Pep Boys or similiar?
Gotta disagree on the "Goodyear belt is noisy" comment. I put one on because a new GM belt was squeaking just like the original. The Goodyear belt fixed the squeak and it is definitely not noisier than the OEM.
"Normal" wear time on a serpentine belt is very hard to gauge, and strictly dependent on type of usage. A visual inspection will tell you everything that you need to know about the belt. Are any edges frayed, any cracks on the smooth surface of the belt, any cracks side to side on the ribbed side of the belt ? If you have any of these conditions replace the belt, if not don't worry about replacement. Buy a good quality belt, they are only a few $ more and will repay you with much longer life. You can replace yourself in about 15 minutes, all it takes is a breaker bar or ratchet to take the tension off the spring roller.
Thanks all, questions answered well...Now what is a "good" quality belt if the Goodyear is not (don't know this yet) and where to purchase and for how much$$$?
I bought my GY belt from a small parts store (not a chain, none of them in my area carried GY brand) for $29. I've listed the part numbers in another post if you want to search for it.
15mm socket on the tensioner, push (standing on passenger side) and slip the belt off
then snake it through the other pulleys and discard
I recommend cleaning your pulley surfaces off while the belt is out (I used brake cleaner and a small wire brush)
Install new belt. I found it easiest to push most of the belt around the crank pulley, then situate it at alternator/pwr steer pump, then goto the pass. side and finish routing. Slip the belt over your socket THEN put the socket on the tensioner, then push the tensioner and slip belt onto tensioner pulley.
Double check that the belt is centered on ALL pulleys before starting it up.
