Default What is my shifter malfunction?

Sometimes I cant get 1st gear when shifting from 3rd. The shifter feels pretty loose. I tried to move it laterally and it will move about an inch to either side when in 1st, 3rd or 5th gears... seems like.
What is my problem here? is it loose linkage or the bolt worked itself loose that interconnects the shifter to the transmission shift rod?
I installed a c6 shifter a few months ago and had no problems initially.

There is one sure way to find out....remove the console, and take a look.

I agree and have yet to do that, I just wanted to prepare myself for what lies ahead.

You want us to guess.... OK, some part of the shifting mechanism is worn out, loose or broken.

I hope that helped.

I'm never understand this type of thread. For starters, you are the one who installed the shifter. This suggests you are familiar with the install, connection points, bolt locations, etc. So your approach is to not check your work, or perform any investigation, while having forum members guess as to what might be wrong, when you are the common denominator? Personally, I would investigate my own work first, checking the shifter install, tightness of bolts, and alignment. If you can't find anything wrong, THEN I would ask for help.

OK. Based on my experience, you screwed-up the installation and the shifter has come loose.

Fixed the problem. Apparently one of the 4 previous owners had stripped out the T40 torx bolt that held the collar onto the shifting rod of the transmission. When I installed the shifter I just reused the bolt, but the last 1/4" of threads were stripped out and that is where the crutial engagement point is. The bolt worked itself loose causing the shifted malfunction.
I went to lowes and replaced the bolt, everythings fine now.

You may want to use a lock washer on that too, I did.
