My 1999 needs a new driver's side door control module. They are nearly impossible to find, as they are not being manufactured at this point. I had to order a refurbished part. My question for anyone who may have installed these in the past, is: can my husband install this part for me, or do I need to take it to the dealer to be done because of compatibility issues between the used part and my main computer? We have heard that the used part will need to be programmed to my vin number and may cause security problems. Can anyone help? Thanks so much!

It's my understanding, that the mandatory programming of a DCM replacement, ONLY applies to a hardtop(FRC).
The service DCM must be programmed by using a scan tool (hardtop only). The DCM stores information regarding the vehicle option content. If the DCM is not properly configured with the correct option content, the DCM will set default values for some systems which could cause system malfunctions. When a DCM is replaced on hardtop vehicles only, perform the following programming procedure:
DCM Programming (Hardtop Only)
Important:
Before proceeding with this programming procedure, check for proper communications between the DCM and the scan tool. If communications cannot be established, refer to the DCM Diagnostic System Check.
Maintain the battery voltage while the DCM is in the programming mode.
Using a Tech 2, select LDCM if the LH DCM was replaced, or RDCM if the RH DCM was replaced.
Select DCM Reprogram.
Follow the instructions on the remaining screens.
