TTS/Steve Cole claims on their web site that their headers can be installed from the bottom. Has anyone done this? Have any tips? Are there any write-ups available? I'm going to be tackling this job next week and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I have the TTS headers and like them. The only problem was the dip stick needed some re-location. Also use heavier gasket. Headers are great, good torque increase. ---good luck.
We half heartedly tried from below, but definitely easier from the top.
The top bolts on the collector flanges can be tough as they are in line with the O2 bungs. You might make sure you have a socket/extension etc that will clear before tearing things apart.
Check the primaries for clearances once more after everything is buttoned up, particularly on the passenger side. One of mine was a tad close for comfort. Much better after long pry bar and shallow dimple.
Also, you'll notice there's no hanger at the collector end. This is because you are expected to cut the old one off and tack it to the uncoated reducers. ;) Do a search for posts by Steve Cole in the archives and you'll find his description.
Thanks for the tips guys, but I'm still confused about why Steve Cole would state what he does on his web site if it's easier to install these headers from the top. Here's what he says about his headers, taken directly from his site:
"These 1-5/8" primary tube headers are ceramic coated mild steel and come with Y-pipes included. Y-body headers use the stock catalytic converters. They are installed from the bottom and the wire loom on the driver's side will need to be modified to attach to the front 02 sensor (just slide the wire back without any cutting required)."
Has ANYONE installed these headers from the bottom? Thanks!
Problem solved, guys. RG of Exit 28 (one of our sponsors) just sent me an excellent and thorough, step-by-step, 4 page TTS header installation instructions document. According to RG, it was written up by one of his customers and it's, in a word, outstanding and is just what I needed. Oh, and, yes, they do go in from below.

Four pages? I remember somebody saying it was too hard and returning them. Care to share? I'd like to know the Right Way. :D

After reading through them, it sounds harder going in from the bottom than from the top. E.g., we did not have to monkey with the steering shaft on the driver's side. Also, only had to lift the passenger side to drop the header in. Some finesse and a wee bit o' patience was required. ;)
Well, I'm REALLY glad to hear that! :D I installed the converter just a couple of weeks ago, so I've been praying that doing the headers would be at least a little easier! Thanks!
RG sent me that info when I installed mine, thanks RG it was very helpful. I did however install them from the top, they would not fit in from the bottom. Patience is key to the install. I didn't have to remove the steering shaft.
Good luck, have fun.
