Thanks in advance for your help. Anyone have or can tell me where to get instructions for changing the switch on the A4 tranny for the back up lights. I have checked everything else, bulbs good, fuses good, relay replaced. Have I missed anything. I am new at this and learning as I go so all help is appreciated.
Then it's not your backup light switch. The approach lights don't go through it. Look at the diagram above. If neither the b/u or approach lights work, I'd go to checking the bulbs, connectors, or grounds for the b/u lights. The source voltage comes from two different place and through two different fuses. Measure for 12v on the socket, look for corrosion on the ground, most importantly, make sure the bulbs are good. I'm assuming when you said 'relay replaced' you were referring to #38? You could also have a broken wire running to the lights from the fuse box relay connections.

B/U bulbs are good, bulb housings are clean, I will take connectors apart and clean them. Where exactly is the ground. The one under the hood in the fuse compartment is very clean. Yep was #38 that was replaced.
Have you measured for 12 volts on the bulb contact with the key on and car in reverse? That will tell you if you have a ground or voltage issue. Measure from the bulb contact in the connector to a known ground. Be careful, if it is there, it is easy to short and blow the fuse.

No voltage at all. License plate lights branch off the same harness and work fine. Don't know where to check for ground.
Check for Voltage at these 2 Connectors.

I am electrically challanged. I see the sehmatic but don't know where those connectors are. Please enlighten me. Seems I am learning something new every day.
I used a continuity tester. I cliped it to the TI exhaust tip.
That is not an acceptable ground. Use a chassis ground point, or run a long wire to the negative battery post.

Continuity does nothing for troubleshooting. You can have continuity, with high resistance, or shorting between wires. If you want to solve problems on a C5, you need a meter.

Got a meter, ran a wire from neg battery to the back of the car. turned on key, put car in reverse. Touched red prong to light socket where light touches and black to the ground wire from the battery. I got no reading at all. Hooked meter up to 18V battery and it read 18.3 V just to make sure the meter worked. I tried both connectors and got no reading. Not sure what to do next.
Hope you had a good labor day weekend.
With everything else the same setup, now touch the red lead to both sides of fuse 21 in the passenger footwell fuse box. Do you have 12 volts on both sides?
