Default overheating. stat? waterpump?

I have a 2000 m6 that has been running fine all summer until today. The temps wet all the way to the red and I had to keep shutting my car down in the way home for it to cool. The overflow bottle was full and there were no leaks I could see. I checked the rad hoses and the lower rad hose was cold. I am thinking that either there is a problem with the thermostat or a problem with the waterpump. I am leaning towards thermostat as a pump usually never has a complete failure all of a sudden. Then again in my 20 years of working with cars I have never had a thermostat go bad either. Any ideas?

Yep sounds like the stat. I have seen many over the years stick closed, open or half-way. Just changed one couple months ago stuck Partly open. I would flush the system too.

If the lower hose is cold, something for sure is impeding the coolant flow through the radiator. A stuck closed thermostat can certainly cause it.

Pull the stat, put it in a pot of water with a thermometer and see if it opens-IT'S SCIENCE MR. WIZARD!
