468 ls
I stumbled on a article online about a 468 LS, but it did not mention what block it used.
Google search did'nt bring up much, had no idea you could have such a big LS!
Anybody know about them?

is this the one you're talking about?

looks like they put some serious work into an LS3 to shoehorn in some 4.185 pistons & a 4.25 crank

I was told that 482 was as large as you could go, with a tall-deck LSX block. 4.25" x 4.25"
Not sure if that's entirely true. I believe bore spacing has to stay 4.4" center-to-center for any LS block so I don't think you'd want to make the bore any larger than 4.25". I guess maybe with a custom crank you could get a little bit more stroke but GM doesn't recommend larger than 4.25".

OK now I found another site that says the tall deck block can handle a 4.5" stroke. That would be 511.

I don't think any of the GM aluminum blocks can do that. The LSX tall deck block can handle a 4.5" stroke, but the standard decks can only handle 4.25". Maybe 4.3" if you can get a machine shop to spend some time on your block.
Maximum bore would still be 4.25" and for that you would have to sleeve it, and since you have to sleeve it, it doesn't matter if you use an LS1, 2, 3, or 6 block.
So if you could manage a 4.3" stroke (I don't see a 4.3" stroke on TSP's website - only 4.25) then you could build an aluminum-block 488.
That said - TSP does have a Lunati 4.6" crank on their site. That with a tall-deck LSX would make a 522.

454/ls#
You can get ERL to sleeve a LS3 block and end up with 454CI. I've got one sitting in the crate waiting for my head studs from WCCH.

Hey Bob, about how much does it cost to have a LS3 block sleeved to make a 454?
Would it be better to start with a LSX block, yes I know they weight more, but in my case it might not matter as I don't race.

I paid $5000 for the work. The quality was very good. They charged me $1200.00 for a new LS3 block.
I'm in the process of moving, so I won't have it installed for a month or so.

This is interesting, I would like to know how your 454 build ranks vs a LS7, and if you can build the whole thing cheaper than the price of a crate LS7.
A big inch engine like this sounds more fun to me than a stock LS1 with a supercharger like a lot of the guys run.

How much is a crate LS7? $11,000? Don't forget that it has a forged crank and main caps, and forged titanium rods when you're comparing costs.

Wow, I have not seen them for that low, maybe they have come down since the last time I looked.
Would love to have one in my 99, even though the 75K LS1 runs like a champ, it needs more power after having it for over 8 years!

No, I guess not. I know when they came out they were around $14,000 and I thought maybe they had come down. Lowest I see is $13,500.
