While investigating a no start condition on my 98, I'm noticing that the lug on the starter (the larger one where the power connects) is loose in the solenoid, as in I can wiggle it around.
Could this be the source of my problem? I was searching for damaged wiring, bad connections, etc., but after I disconnected the wires, I saw this.
Doesn't seem right that its loose, duh. Is this repairable, or do I need a new starter? Can I just replace the solenoid? Is there a widely available replacement at AZ or someplace like that?
You should be able to replace the solenoid by itself, its going to run you about 60$ Im guessing as thats what I paid for the one on my tractor. I cant imagine it should be lose at all though and it would seem like to me at least that it could pose a problem with not making proper contact.
I picked up my replacement solenoid at shop that had something on their sign about started I think, its been a few years. Of course they had to match up a solenoid because it was for a tractor... hope this helps.
It should not be loose. It will cause a no start or intermittent start issue if it is. I've seen that on two other cars, both had headers. It looks like the header heat carbonized the bakelite material around the post. I've seen posts here (I think from Bill Curlee) about changing just the solenoid. Maybe a search would bring up that post.
