well when my wife got home from work I went out and unplugged the MAF and took it for a spin. There was almost no change (maybe a little better but definitely not gone)
Does anyone have any guesses as to what that means?
Should the car run a lot worse without the MAF plugged in because it almost seems normal? That seems weird to me that it would run almost exactly the same...
The check engine light has not turned on yet but it has code p0102 stored (maf code)
Before you spend a sheetload of money, search the forum for the "seafoam" or "decarb" procedure. Takes all of $6 and about 30 minutes of your time. I have an '02 C5 A4 that was doing the same thing and a decarb knocked (pun intended) it out. Only had 38k miles and also appeared to use no/little oil. To have ping when cold would be very odd I would think unless your a/f ratio and/or timing was completely screwed. I think you may be hearing the infamous piston slap that is so prevalent in the LS motors and can be mistaken for ping until the motor warms up. Just my .02. Good luck!

A few people have made comments about decarbonizing the motor... I have tried a couple of different products like seafoam and Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner...
for any of you who find this post and have exhausted all other avenues and still have pinging problems... here is what worked for me.
I found someone local who specializes in ls motors and tuning. I took it down to him and withing 15 min he looked at my car and looked at my timing tables and they were too far advanced. He said that there were many different ways for it to end up like this but more than likely someone had used a hand held tuner and messed things up. He changed a few things around and BAM!!! Everything is better!!!
I am so excited
No pinging whatsoever at any range of the rpm band (oh and the motor was at 220 degrees and it is around 111 degrees outside today here in arizona) still no pinging
I can now drive my car again without the fear of having major problems and slowly ruining my motor!!!
