I recall that the 97,98,99 fob does work with a 2000, however the passive entry feature cannot be turned off...I fussed with mine on my '99, but in the end just converted it over to a 2001+ system (fobs, tire pressure sensors, receiver).
There may be different opinions, but there's only one fact: yes, the fob will work with a 2000. I don't know why you would want to since the 2000 fob is cheaper than the older ones and the passive switch won't work with a 2000. (Don't know what the guy meant by can't be turned off, the 2000 doesn't have that feature available on the car, but the fob functions of lock/unlock/panic/trunk work fine) You can buy a 2000 fob brand new from gmpartshouse.com for around $70.

Thanks again for the info..The only reason I asked about the earlier fobs is because the 2000 fobs are currently on "national" back order. No one I called had them in stock. Since my car goes into storage for the winter in a few weeks, I am going to wait and hope the correct one becomes available by spring ..
