Hi all...
I drove up to my parents house after driving an hour and a half and everything was fine with my car. After it sat for the day, I took it on a short (like 1 minute drive) to the house I am going to be moving into- its literally 1/4 mile away from my parents house.
Anyways, I got there and turned the car off and everything shut down normally but I heard this really loud almost mechanical noise coming from under the steering wheel column for about 5 seconds or so.
First I thought it was something to do with having the AC on... dont know why I thought that but I turned it off and went inside.
I came out and started the car u then took the short drive back to my parents and the same noise happened again. It was dark out and I didnt take a closer look the mosquitos were eating me alive so I just went in.
What in the world can this be? I am almost afraid to start and shut off the car because it sounds so loud.
BTW- the last "mod" i did was hard wire a radar detector a week ago and no wires went down under the steering column-- only tucked a wire under the lip of the panel.
GUYS! Its not coming from under steering column... i asked dad to listen and well... turning the car on and off didnt make the noise so I thought, it was dark last night so I had to use my headlights- i opened then closed them and my dad said it was coming from the drivers side headlight.
No biggie-- I am replacing with stealth light cannon V2 (GP in the works).
BTW I had never heard this noise in my 98 Firebird that I had until 2010 and I drove at night constantly (was sure the motor would fail or strip). kind of funny actually.

If you decide you want to fix the problem in case you ever go back to stock the problem is that the nylon gear inside your headlight motor is stripped. You can buy another nylon one or buy an aftermarket brass one http://www.rodneydickman.com/catalog/index.php
