Can't read gear designation for automatic
Hello.
In my 98 Corvette I can't read the gear designations on the automatic stick shift.
I had some A/C work done and the mechanics had to remove the center console and dash board.
My dealer says the whole shift assembly has to be replaced including a new shift handle.
Is there another way to make the P R N D letters show up without replacing the whole mechanism?

It kind of depends on what was taken apart for the AC Repair.
Best case is that the mechanic disconnected the connector for the indicator light and this just needs to be plugged back in. Worst is that when they were working on the car the broke the red indicator tab that is attached to the selector lever.
I would find another shop to inspect the issue or a forum member near you. I would not let the shop that did the work look at this.
This looks like the shop might be taking advantage of you.

If it worked before the shop did the A/C repair, then it should still be working when it left the shop!
I would hold that shop accountable, if they caused it to stop working during their repair work.
