98 C5 LS1, when car is cold it starts up at first try, after car has been running for a while then shout off. if not started within 10 -20 seconds, it takes at least 3 trys to get it running (started). Chevy dealer scan and said they see nothing wrong with it. New plugs & wires, still the same. i'm thinking it could be a dirty fuel filter. what do u think i should check next..help...............tks
The search will show you lots of how to's on this but here's the short version. Push and hold the Options button, then push the Fuel button 4 or 5 times within like 5 seconds. It will then scroll through the codes. You can use the Options button again to manually scroll through them with the trip and and guages buttons to select and get to individual codes. Reset on a code will clear it. Pay attention to the "H" and "C"s for each code and write them all down, then post them here. If you have a lot of codes, after you've recorded them, clear them all. E/M will cause the display to exit back to the normal. Shut down the car and restart then run the codes again to see what comes back, if any.

Now you can do a SEARCH on those codes and learn more. AND, check the fuel pressure cold and when it won't start.
Old electrical fuel pumps get "funny" when they are HOT-typically the beginning of the end for them. As long as they stay running hot all is well but shut them off and they lock up till the cool down just before they die forever.
Yes check fuel pressure--But have you ever changed the fuel filter ??? It most likely never has been out--
Do you have an aftermarket cold air intake or lifetime oiled filter?
If so most issue is over-oiling of the filter--The MAF become oil soked and when it gets hot the oil becomes burnt onto the tiny MAF wires causing the MAF to give erroneaous data---Take apart your air intake and clean with Brakeclean--be careful not to touch the wires---make sure the MAF honeycomb screen was NOT removed---Without tuning that will cause a host of starting/idling surging probelms
Whenever your eng is started wether cold or warm--the ECM is in Open loop mode-When cold the coolant must move past 140* for the ECM to switch to "closed loop" When warm it is swithed via a timer-usually around 20 seconds before it goes into closed loop--So whenever starting the 02's are out of the picture and would point to either the MAF or fuel
I have been using brakeclean for years without issue---It drys fast and leaves NO residue behind--Sure MAF or T-Body cleaner is OK but it's double the cost and most likey has the same ingredients !
