Re: What is the column lock bypass? (dwaynelombardi)
The CLB is a small electronic device that bypasses GM's column lock mechanism (CLM). The CLM is known to fail, which results in the car being disabled since the BCM will not allow you to drive the car with a locked steering column.
The CLB plugs into the existing wiring harness and simulates the "signals" that the BCM monitors to make it happy while disabling the column lock, which is useless anyway. The CLM was removed from all Automatic Xmission cars in 2001, and was supposedly modified for 6-spds. It was still required in 6-spds to pass some federal requirement for safety, while the Autos pass that requirement with it's shift interlock.

Even if you haven't had a problem with your column locking I would install the CLB! It will give you 100% peace of mind. I think that L.A.P.D. still has some. Give Shawn a call! :yesnod:
Re: What is the column lock bypass? (johnnyvettes)
are 2000 coupes with auto affected by this problem ??????
All 2000's could be affected by the problem.
There was a TSB issued that affected 2000's with a vin beginning Y5116234 thru the End of Production
I suspect recall 01044 applied to the earlier ones in the 2000 model run.

Yes! I had to have mine flatbedded 3 times before I installed the CLB! :mad The dealer "fixed" it each time and the 2nd time was with the new and improved version!

There was both a recall and a TSB.
If you have an A4, the FiX basically disconnects the column lock much like the bypass. On MN6's they apparently put in new parts which can fail again.
I have read stories that the bypass will not work on fixed (recalled/TSBed_)C5's but personally doubt that to be the case.
