99 Corvette dies when it gets hot
I have a 1999 coupe and have had problems the last couple days with the car just dying when it gets hot. I first thought it was a fuel issue because it would crank afterwards but not catch. I got it to do it in my garage and I got the error "charging system error" I let it cool down and started it again an hour later and both put a volt meter on it and watched the car's meter. Sure enough, when it got to a point, the voltage dropped from 13.5 to 12.2 or 11.something. The alternator and battery look like they have recently been replaced. After it dies, I hear clicking coming from all over from the trans to the top of the engine. It's like the car is possessed. It drives fine until it gets over 220 degrees. The cooling fan seems to work and doesn't seem to be the culprit.

I'm new to Vettes, not new to working on cars - so my initial thought is something is shorting out when the temp gets up there. First guess would be the cooling fans and I think you should still go over the wiring there. But I'm not sure what else it could be, don't know these cars well enough to know what triggers 'on' at high temps.

So if I'm reading you correctly, once it gets to the point the fans should be turning on, you get a charge system fault and the car quits and will not restart?

Sounds like you need an alternator. somewhere in that temp range is when the fans come on and the battery cant supply enough voltage to continue to run the car. Just my guess though. I'm sure other suggestions are on the way.
