Default Car dying randomly

Hi guys,

Need a little help. I have an 04 Z06, 39K, supercharged if it matters, which died immediately after starting it two days ago. It died smoothly, wasn't idling rough or anything, pretty much exactly like someone just turned the key and shut it off. It ran fine so I decided to take it out today thinking the worse that happens is I get stuck in the parking lot at work. Instead, however, it happened while I was driving. I was coming up to a traffic light and the car just died on me. It took at least 12 tries before it started. Once it started it drove fine with no issues. When it died, I still had the radio, lights, etc.

I got home and pulled the codes, they were all historical but it definitely points me in the right direction. The codes I have are:

U1160H

B2282H
B2284H
B2286H

B2283H
B2287H
B2285H

I know both are the door control modules but I just can't figure it out if I should start with the battery, ignition, grounds, or something else. I ran an ohm meter across the key and the resistor was fine. I also checked the battery, which was a little low, 12.08 but I'm not sure that's enough to kill the car. I can't figure out how it could be the battery causing the car to immediately shut off but I know it's worth a look.

Any ideas on where to start? I did a search but couldn't find someone with the same codes as me so I just want to be sure I start in the right place.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try and check that out tonight. Just wondering, but would that cause the codes for the left door module as well? I'm just lost on why both modules have the same errors.

Your battery is low. For a C-5, a solid 12.5 or above is needed. No charge system fault messages? Anyway, check the battery and solenoid connections along with 8VETTE7's suggestions. Another possibility is the ignition switch itself needs to be looked at. There are more than one set of contacts inside and many people have found burned contacts and etc...in there.

Thanks for the help guys. I noticed that it was a little weak about a week ago but I've seen it before and after a good run it's usually back to normal. One piece of important information that I fogot to mention was that while I was measuring the battery I saw it start to drain from 12.08 to 12.07 to 12.06 in a matter of a minute or two. The battery isn't very old but I think it's time for a new one.

Could it cause a complete shut down like that and then restart a few minutes later? I just want to know for my own understanding.

There is a drain on it from the various systems even though the engine is off, till the systems all power down and even then, there is about a 20ma drain which is normal. Now if your engine was running and you were only seeing 12.0 volts, something more serious is wrong.

check the connections on the starter and make sure they are clean and tight.

Ok, tried to charge the batter last night. I tested the battery Monday night, and it was 12.07 when I stopped looking at the car. Wed. night, before I charged it I checked the battery and it was 11.96. After charging for 2.5 hours at 10 amps, it was 12.37 and I watched it steadily drop to 12.34 within about a minute. I don't know if this battery can hold a charge any longer. I'll probably just pick up a new one. Any thoughts?

Get under the car and try to wiggle the big cable that goes to your starter. I had a similar issue and the stud that you bolt the cable onto.. on the starter had broken and got intermittent connections. Perfect starter but the stud had broken in its case totally making the starter useless.

I had this same type of problem. Car would die with everything else having power still. Ended up being a crank sensor. I did notice when it first started that at cruising speed it just kind had a very slight miss every now and then. Within about 2 days it started dying off and on.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, I put a new battery in and the car started perfectly. Decided to take it for a quick drive and noticed that when pushing in the clutch the RPM's would drop considerably low to about 500 before catching and coming back up.

I did a little more investigative work when I got home and noticed that that when I turned the AC on and off the RPM's would drop and then catch and come back up.

There are no codes but my brother hooked up a scanner and saw that the EVAP system was not ready.

To me it sounds like a vacuum leak because I can't figure out how else the RPM's would be all over the map like that. Anyone have a diagram to the vacuum system in an 04 Z06 or any other ideas?

You probably only need to do an idle relearn following the battery replacement.
