Default Hypertech PP III – Impressions

I actually got the programmer over the winter and tuned the car shortly after taking it out of storage but I no longer had a feel for the stock set up and couldn’t really tell the difference between tuned and stock so I reloaded the stock settings and had been driving it that way for a few weeks…until today. :)

Tuning Process – I chose custom tuning, power tune, 180-degree thermostat fans setting and 75% shift firmness. I had my DIC set on fuel, avg. mile per gallon (it read 18.2 mi/gal). When the tuning process started my DIC read ‘Service Traction System’. At about 50% tuning complete the door chimes sounded for a few seconds while my DIC read ‘Reduced Engine Power’ (I questioned Hypertech on this a month ago and they said it’s normal). When the tuning process was over my DIC went back to my fuel avg. but instead of reading 18.2 it read 16.3. I lost 2 mi/gal while sitting in my driveway.

So…now we go for a ride. :) A beautiful, sunny, crisp spring morning.
The car seems to be a little more responsive, especially when accelerating mildly in the 30-40mph range and the 75% shift firmness wakes my A4 up a bit (I had it set at 100% the first time I tuned but throttled back this time ‘cuz I’m a wuss). :bb

Impression – The power increase is noticeable but minimal IMO. The shift firmness is pretty cool. The fact that you can go back to stock…priceless. A concern, of course, is that my DIC lost 2 mi/gal while sitting in the driveway. What else changed that I can’t notice? (By the time I got back from my test-ride it had come up to 16.9 mi/gal – I’ll have to e-mail Hypertech on that one).

So far, I’m glad I bought it but then I’m not a real big modder with no plans to change gears or cam , etc. It's probably not for the heavy modder.

I think I’d better go for another test-ride. :) Thanks for takin’ the time to read.

It looks like you and I are in the same boat, modding wise. Thanks for posting your experience with it. I am considering one, but not entirely sold on them yet. Plus, I've got some $$$ flow issues right now anyway. :blueangel:

Try this also:
a) 1-2 shift / +2 mph (car will shift at @50mph)
b) 2-3 shift / +5 mph (car will shift at @90mph)
c) rev limiter set to 6300 rpm
The only reason the rev limiter may need to be kicked up 100 rpm (6200 is stock) is because when its cold outside, you will sometimes hit the rev limiter as the car will spin the tires quite a bit on the upshifts.
You will be pleased with the above settings in conjunction with your 75% firmness and power tuning selections. :yesnod:
By the way, if you have a stock thermostat (192 'F), and use the 180 'F thermostat setting, the fans will probably stay on all the time, but the thermostat will still tend to regulate to whatever its calibrated setting is...your choice. I am very pleased with my Hypertech also.

I am wanting to adjust mine a little, however I am confused on which one to go with Superchip, Hypertech or wait a little and get LS1 Edit and have someone else do it I really like the idea of returning to stock if you want. I have added the RMC Twinflow Air Filter and am going to pick out a new exhaust (Maybe Headers?) as soon as I get to hear that new MENSI TUBI :yesnod: :yesnod:

I would check this out further before you install it. It is not always easy to reload the old settings. I know people that have had to try 4 or 5 times before they reloaded the original factory settings. I think the only value to this product is the ability to move the rev limiter and perhaps whatever shift benefit you get with an A4 tranny.
If you want good tuning purchase a Mass Air Flow Translator i.e. Autotap and tune your own car. If you are just starting out you will get one at some point. Do it now and save the money you will spend on the Hypertech unit unless you really want to use it for purposes other than tuning. Just my opinion. They must sell alot of them.

They are a ping pong chip as are all the others (Ping pong because they go back and forth quite often)Look for a custom tuning shop in your area that has LS1-Edit or a compatible unit we also use a Snap On which is quite good and make sure rhey have a Dyno-Jet the industry benchmark for Dynos and they have a 5,000.00 software add on that also reads F/A Ratio through out the power band together they work synergisticly and form a monster tunning machine.
There is nothing better than tunning your maps on the Dyno-Jet and you know its being done correctly the 1st time.We spend alot of time with2 techs and a lap top in your car fine tuning it from bumper to bumper traffic coditions ,off idle sequence as well as 0-150mph bursts at the airport. We find our tunning process on a stage 3 head/mild medium grind Hyd cam a little radical but great idle/long tube headers, some Stingers /black wing and all the bolt on pieces can add upwards of 18-25 rrwhp and many engine builders simply churn Em'out with a Cole or wright chip on a car they dont know seems to be alot of miscommunication between builders and tunners thats why any great shop will have the right tool for THE JOB!!!!!
Good Luck on your projects to come, the urges get stronger and its very important to try to keep some sembalence of order. If you would like a PCM done we would be happy to perform that service for you,and we have a ping pong record as well 2 maybe 3 times but if at anytime you upgrade your motor we will do the PCM upgrade only when its needed if were your experriancing a problem call us and we will jump on it and fed Ex it out in 1-3 biz.days and for a small fee we will burn a copy of your PCM in case of a fluke or accident were frame damage and chip damage do,thank the Lord its not often maybe once in 6 years of Biz.
PSIf you have a recent dyno chart or can have a few pulls done it helps us to see what works together in harmony and adds power we asually know from experiance between customer feedback and us trying to tryout every part we sell on our own cars as well as test Mule.We just added a brand new 02 Vert eletron Blur/oak(beiege) top and interior still had window tickers when weund one in CO. Denver area shes wonderful and 6 spd.
In the next few weeks we will install the C5R with 10 Lbs. of boost ATI procharger but 1st we want some #bne stock.Congrats Nate drive it like you robbed a bank.Dave
