I bought a complete shifter from a fellow forum brother and installed it today. I printed out some step by step instructions off the internet so it went pretty smooth. My only short snag was he gave me the leather boot with the plastic band it goes around but it wouldn't fit my console so I took the staples out and pull the leather loose from both bands and swapped the C6 leather to the C5 plastic band. No staples but I glued it up real good. Here are a couple of pictures. Really like the feel of it compared to the C5 shifter. Like night and day, love it. Check it out. Would recommend it to ever C5 owner.
Took around 2 hours and yes, you have to remove the console. Not hard, I think on a coupe it would be easier. No waterfall to remove. Not a real difficult job.

A c6 owner just gave me his shifter, nothing with it but the actual shifter rod - will I be able to swap this in without it looking like a ghetto job? And when you say its a huge night & day difference can you describe what specifically is so much better?

yep. my short shifter is basically a C6Z shifter with a shorter stick. the worst part about the swap is pulling the Demon Key out of the C5 shift ****. after that, just swap the shifters out, but your old boot on, and then screw your stock **** on. put everything back together & you couldn't visually tell anything's different
You make a good point on the cost difference. I was able to pick up a used MGW for $150 so it wasn't a tough decision. I will say the C6 shifter is a nice improvement to the stock C5 shifter. It has a better angle and the **** fits your hand well. Enjoy the new feel while you drive your Corvette.
