Don't I need to, in order to pull the compressor bracket off? I am a first timer on automobile A/C systems, if you couldn't tell already.

Oh yeah, I didn't know you were going to pull the bracket off already. I thought you were going to add the dye and see if you could determine the leak spot.

Yeah you're not supposed to vent the refrigerant to the atmosphere, but you certainly wouldn't be the first person to do it...

My brother and I replaced the compressor in my C5 a couple weeks ago. Took 6 hours and was not difficult. Only annoying thing is removing the water pump. Get the instructions from the forum and follow them. Good luck.
