I am seeing the Aluminum intake manifolds on ebay that seem to be priced pretty decent compared to FAST and LS6. Are there any pros and cons to the Manifold?
There are a few out there, Weind, BBK. They look really nice, however there have been some fitment issues with them leaking especially under boost, and they hold in heat causing hotter AIT temps.
Most people buy a FAST or stick with the stock LS6 as they flow well.
The Polished ones look good, but you will spend 600-800 for an intake that will give you less performance because of heat and may possibly leak over time.
Thats why most if not all the fast guys go with a FAST or just keep their LS6. If you want your intake to look better, look for a plastic chrome cover. Thats what I did.
The ONLY reason I ever wanted to do this is with the composite intakes on the GM 3800 engine-known pieces of junk-prone to leakage. GM finally went back to aluminum before the end of the 3800.
My '99 FRC came with a Weiand. PO was a little into the "bling" factor. Reputable local tuner suggested swapping it for a ported LS6 manifold for the above exact reason-HEAT. That's MY plan.
My friend's '99 FRC has an aluminum intake, and it flows really, really well. Heat soak isn't a problem for him because he flows water through a heat exchanger in it. It must work well because his car is very quick. But I think the aluminum intake must be hard on one of his accessories. You can hear an annoying whine/shreak every time he goes WOT, even louder than the spinning tires.
