I have an 01 vette, and i broke the differentialside cover, I have gotten another diff with 4:10 gears... Every online how to i see has me remove everything ( basically all but the bell housing) ... from looking at the car it appears i can remove it by just putting a jack stand under the transmission and removing the rest of teh rearend cradle, etc down and then taking the diff off.
this would allow me to leave the exhaust, and center section and torque tube alone.
I have a full lift trans type jack, jack stands and all tools needed.
Yes, you can drop the rear cradle and then pull the diff off the trans. You don't need to mess with the trans, torque tube, shifter, exhaust etc to swap a diff. You might have to unbolt the catback at the flanges by the trans but you shouldn't have to remove it any further.
so, yes. it's a good write up, if you want to do a TON of extra work. not sureif i'll get to post pictures as it seems everyone i know is working that day. and i'm not washing my hands 300 times to take pics.
Thanks peter! Hopefully i can be driving it tomorrow night if get an early start!
I need to do the diff and the trans. So I assume once the diff is out, the trans isn't a bunch more work.
I will be doing heads/cam and all that at the same time, so after reading here, I see that I ought to get the engine apart first. That's going to be a lot of cups full of bolts!
And a royal pain in the butt in a one car garage.
It's gonna be great!
Well. Could not doit without pulling the X pipe. so had to dothat.. things giong back together..
as for the bracket for on the E-Brake, dont' taketeh bracket off... can't get teh bolts lined up soi'm having to pull the caliper bracket, and shockto get it back on. that's a PITA.
I wishihad a garage... I'd reccomend doing them as separately as possible as to not overwhelm yourself. if you haven't worked on a lot of cars.
Good luck if there are any questions you have just ask, it's pretty fresh in my mind.

Taking the bracket off is definitely the easiest way to do it (I've done it both ways numerous times). The bolts have to line up with the brake backing plate, they pass through the hole in the knuckle and thread into the backing plate. So basically, wiggle the rotor/backing plate a little to get it to line up.
