I just got a "new-to-me" C5 after a woman texting caused my beloved 92 Vette to got to Vette heaven after taking out three trees.
Anyway, I have had this car for a month and it has the narrow 5 spoke chrome wheels. I was in WallyWorld picking up a prescription and came outside to see my rear tire flat. I hobbled it around the building to the tire and lube center. Naturally I thought I picked up a nail or something as did they..............until they sprayed the soapy magic detector fluid on the rim and found a crack at the joint of the spoke. I was on line and found this is a very common, actually too common of an occurrence. I called the local salvage yard and they even said they scrap a lot of them out for same reason.
Perhaps some lawyer type out there in the Corvette world should consider a class action suit? I normally do not get involved in these things but after speaking with about a dozen other local vette owners that either experienced the same thing or know of someone that has, it is time to do something.......don't you think?
If they were chrome they weren't stock and that probably voided any warranty anyway. Stock only came in polished aluminum with clear coat in the thin spokes, no chrome. The magnesium wheel was an option, but could never be confused with chrome.
They may be factory wheels, but as "65GGvert" has said, the factory didn't offer chrome wheels as either standard or optional. I'm sure that MANY factory wheels were chromed, but only by the aftermarket.
While there may be NHTSA reports on file, I'm sure that GM would refute them, first of all due to the age of the C-5s, and secondly, because GM knew that the chroming process would have a negative effect on the metallurgy of the wheels.
