I just bought a 99 Hardtop Vette today.
The tread on the tires is very low and they will need to be replaced soon.
I am just wandering what a good set of tires is for C5's that last a good while(if you arent driving real hard), and arent too expensive.
What are some options?
Check out the Eagle F1 GS at Tirerack. The rear 275/40/18's are $166 each. The fronts are 120 something. These are the non-runflats. I bought a set for a little over 600 deliverred and had them mounted at Discount Tire.
Short of a good set of Goodyear EMT "take offs", the best dollar value is going to be Firestone RFTs or Yokohama run flats. The Firestones have a higher tread wear rating than either of the others and rides and performs better than most.
Least expensive tires that I've been happy with are the Sumitomo HTR-ZII's. Good tread wear, quiet and inexpensive. You won't see a lot of mention of that tire here, but I can vouch for it.
$184 at Tirerack.com for a 285 35/18. Fronts are cheaper of course.
I also have a 99 FRC. Got rid of the runflats at about 26,000 miles. Went w/ Nitto 555's (stock size) and love them. Smooth, good grip, quite, and look good. Wear looks good also. Out the door for approx. $800 including the high grade balancing job. New tires, frc partition (which i made) and the $19.95 stero upgrade and it's like having a new car.
If you have a blow out with either tire, you're stuck. The only consideration is for a repairable tire.
Run flats are useless, basically. With an air pump/ repair kit in the car, you can regulate a small leak in a non-run flat tire until you can limp into a tire shop for repair or replacement, necessary for either type. The runflat just means you don't have to stop for 50 miles or so to do the same thing, repair or replace, for a higher price. And they are a be-Ach to get on & off since the bead is so thick. You'd prolly have a difficult time finding anyone in BFE to handle the repair, much less the replacement of a run flat. If it were my daughter or wife alone on the highway at night, sure, for emergencies like escaping rapist serial killers. But me, not even a consideration. They are a waste of money & a performance pooper.
