Any recommendations on the best place to get the stock 2.73 switched out with 3.42 in the Dallas area. I've seen a lot of references to SpeedWorks in Lewisville on the forum - is that a good place to start?
I know there has been mixed reviews, but I recently had my 3.42s replaced with a set of 3.73s by Huffines Chevy in Plano. If you're interested, talk to Keith Overhill in their service department. There are a couple of mechanics he's happy with there, one of which is supposedly a little slower but more meticulous. They did mine about 500 miles ago and so far everything seems fine. By the way, total install with fluids was a little under $500.
i would do either speedworks or lg motorsports. i would stay away from huffines in plano. the one had his getrag 3:73's installed at huffines and left with a nice scratch on his fender. and the first time at the track he broke the output shaft.

Ouch :mad, I forgot that on another occasion Joe's car was scratched. However, after he broke the output shaft, I'm pretty sure he had Speedworks replace the shaft in the gear set and then he had Huffines install the repaired gears. I most certainly admit I've heard problems at Huffines, but after I called around, and particularly given the level of disinterest or lack of call backs I received from many alternatives, I crossed my fingers and went with Huffines.
It's not an easy decision. I picked the brains of many local folks and never found a clear winner. Sorry that doesn't give you a definitive answer either, but it lets you know that so far I don't know of any shop that has stepped up on this particular task to emerge as an always-the-best-choice solution.
Ad2, do you have the 3.42s ? I'll sell mine outright for $800 plus shipping. You can keep your rear to sell. My rear came out of my 2000 Vette with 16,300 miles.
