Default New Suspension - Grease Everywhere Now! Help!

I put on new C6 Z06 shocks and C6 Z51 sway bars and after driving home there's some sort of brownish grease everywhere on each rear brake caliper, control arms, wheel barrels, spun up inside the wheel well. Something is leaking or broke now.

Where can this be coming from and why!?

Mike

You sir have managed to punture the rubber boot/boots of the half shafts, closet to the wheel/wheels.
Referring to the axle that comes out of the differential to the wheel.

Good luck.

Well then, I guess I'll be having a chat with the mechanic that did the install and we'll see how he fixes the issue. Whats the saying about if you want something done right......

Hard to believe the guy could screw up both boots, but stranger things have been known to happen. Yikes......

Assuming that is the issue, what's the fix? Both half shafts being replaced or is there a way to just replace the boots?

GM sells a boot kit. Includes a boot, grease, two clamps.
It's not a fun job.

The only think that can throw out that much grease in the CV joint so you will have to te-boot them.

I wouldn't replace them since you never know what quality a cheap 1/2 shaft will be.

And I wouldn't be taking the car back to that idiot. He must really be a winner to have managed to tear the boots on both sides of the car.

I do have pics, not 100% how to post them though. I can't even go look at the car right now because it pisses me off so much.

When you noticed the grease on your INNER wheels (barrels)
Was there a concentration/glob of grease laying in a puddle on the bottom of
(INNER) the barrels?
If so it's definitely outer boot leakage.

Not really. I think just from the rotation of the wheels it sprayed everywhere. I took the wheels off last week, cleaned the barrels, the calipers, everywhere there was grease and then let the car sit for two days.

I checked the barrels each day to see if there were any drips, and nothing. Drove it Sunday for about 10 miles.....grease everywhere. It's almost like its being forced out of somewhere by road bumps, etc.

The grease is thick when the car has set & will not leak.
When the axles spin the grease gets hot & thin, it then spews greese every where from the rotaton.
Once the car has been driven on the freeway for around a half our & then parked, sometimes the greese (when still hot) will drip straight down & puddle into the very bottom side of the inner wheel barrel.

Mr. Bumble-Z, you been very helpful sir. Thank you. There was a pool. The worst part about this I stood there and watched for 3 hours while every part was put on and the only thing I can think of is he removed the arm the goes from the rubber boot and connects to the control arm. he simply unbolted it from the control arm, and moved it aside to get a little more clearance to install the rear shocks.

I wonder if just moving that arm caused the 11 year old boots to crack?

By reading your profile, you have a 99 Coupe & reside in Ohio.
If your car has been used as a daily driver & subjected to winters salt, snow, etc.
I would assume that a car that is going on 13 years old & still have the (original?) axles, boots, that wear & tear could be a factor when stretching the boots further than they normally set when in their proper positions, could have 1.) pulled loose or tore at the clamp area.
2) Boots were brittle & cracked, when stretched.
3) Torn while using a "pinch bar" near or onto the boots.

Depending on the amount of miles on the axles, would depend on
wheather replacing the axles (complete w/new boots, greese, clamps) or going with new GM boot kits for the inners & outers, totaling four kits.

Yeah, sorry, my profile is only about 4 years outdated.

I never drive it in the winter, so that's out. It goes back on the lift tomorrow at 9am so we can figure out whats going on.

Yes, its going back to the same mechanic. I know some would question that tactic but I have taken my 93, my 99, and now my 2000 to him sine 2001 and haven't had any issues, so I think he still deserves a chance to figure out whats wrong and come up with a viable solution. If its something he did, then I would expect it to get repaired as his cost. if its an amazing coincidence, then so be it.

If I take it someplace else, I'm out $ for them to even look at it.
